Day 1. Arrive Zürich

Considered one of the world’s truly global cities and also the largest city in Switzerland, Zürich has experienced a creative explosion in recent years. Upon arrival here, you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel, with the remainder of the day yours at leisure to relax or perhaps familiarise yourself with this bustling Swiss city. Zürich is home to a range of innovative bars, restaurants and shops just waiting to be discovered. Later tonight, get to know your fellow travellers at a Welcome Reception at the hotel.

Stay: Stay: Zürich, Hotel Schweizerhof

Day 2. Zürich - Lucerne

Today take a tour of Zürich, including such sights as the famous commercial centre, the Old Town, Fraumünster Church with its famous Chagall windows, historical Limmatquai and the University District. You’ll also stop at Zürich City Hall, Grossmünster Church, St Peter’s Church and more. Following lunch at leisure, take the short journey to Lucerne, situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne and within sight of spectacular Mt Pilatus and Mt Rigi. Upon arrival here, take an orientation tour that includes a look at the intricate Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument), carved as a tribute to the hundreds of Swiss Guards who died in 1792 during the French Revolution. You’ll also walk across Mill Bridge, constructed in 1408 and today the oldest covered bridge in Europe, featuring a series of medieval-style 17th century plaque paintings. Later tonight, enjoy a Welcome Dinner.

Day 3. Lucerne - Engelberg

After breakfast this morning, board the coach and travel from Lucerne to the neighbouring mountain resort town of Engelberg. Here, enjoy a brief tour taking in Engelberg Abbey and much more. Then enjoy the truly breathtaking opportunity to ride the cable car from the town, over the scenic mountain landscape and up to Mt Titlis. Following lunch, you’ll return to Lucerne and enjoy the rest of this afternoon at leisure to relax or explore as you please.

Day 4. Lucerne - Andermatt - Zermatt

Today travel into the Swiss Alps to the municipality of Andermatt and board the Glacier Express for a rail journey known to be one of Europe’s most scenic. A high-speed train that travels at a deliberately slow pace, this three-hour journey allows ample time to absorb the scenery outside your panoramic windows. Cross bridges and viaducts, travel through tunnels and marvel at the alpine landscapes, snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys, picturesque villages and castles. Arrive in Zermatt and check in to your hotel, before a delicious dinner tonight.

Day 5. Zermatt

Situated at the northern base of the famous mountain, the Matterhorn, Zermatt is a truly pristine place. Electric cars and horse-drawn sleighs and carriages are the only transport permitted here, ensuring that the alpine air is exceptionally clean. This morning, visit the Matterhorn Museum and ride a cable car to the summit of the Matterhorn for breathtaking views. Then, with the afternoon at leisure, perhaps ride a horse-drawn carriage, go for a nature walk or just relax in this pristine place.

Day 6. Zermatt - Lugano

Today return by cog-wheel train to nearby Täsch then board your coach for the journey to the Italian Lakes District. Here, take a cruise on the tranquil waters of Lake Como. Thanks to its mountainous backdrop as well as the charming villas and towns sitting on its banks, Lake Como is one of Italy’s most romantic attractions. Later, return to Switzerland and arrive in Lugano.

Day 7. Lugano - St Moritz

After breakfast, head for the historically rich town of Bellinzona. Ride a lift from Piazza Del Sole to Castelgrande, before visiting the Castello De Montebello. Having visited two of Bellinzona’s World Heritage-listed castles, travel to St Moritz. On arrival here, check in to your hotel and enjoy time at leisure before dinner tonight.

Day 8. St Moritz - Leichtenstein - Innsbruck

Considered the oldest and one of the most famous winter resorts in the world St Moritz enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year thanks to its prime location. Take a brief tour of this resort area before it’s time to farewell the grand natural landscapes of Switzerland. Travel to the fascinating country of Liechtenstein, geographically the sixth smallest nation in the world. A constitutional monarchy, Liechtenstein follows a policy of neutrality and is one of few countries in the world that maintains no military. Enjoy a look around this unique destination, then continue to the Austrian city of Innsbruck. Tonight, you’ll be treated to a dinner of Austrian specialities before the evening is at your leisure.

Day 9. Innsbruck

After breakfast today, you’ll be taken to the renowned Swarovski Innsbruck, a famous shop that presents an array of crystal products comprising design objects, décor, jewellery and fashion. Here, you’ll also enjoy a visit to the Winter Wonderland, a large, magically artistic and sparkling crystal exhibition that showcases the endless creative possibilities of crystal. Afterwards, journey to the Bergisel Ski Jump, which was used during two separate Winter Olympics. Here, you’ll ride a cable car to the bottom of the ski-jump, then take a lift up to the visitor’s platform where you have an incredible view over the city of Innsbruck and of the surrounding mountains. This afternoon, return to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure to relax or further explore Innsbruck as you choose.

Day 10. Innsbruck - Salzburg

Still in Austria, travel to the famously picturesque city of Salzburg. After checking in to your hotel, the afternoon is yours to spend at leisure. This evening, enjoy the opportunity to indulge in a special cultural dining experience at the Stiftskeller St Peter. Dine on a range of Austrian specialities as the music of Mozart is played.

Day 11. Salzburg

This morning, tour Salzburg’s World Heritage listed Old Town, one of the best preserved city centres in the German speaking world. Absorb the city’s Baroque charm and watch for locations used in the filming of ‘The Sound of Music’. Visit the birthplace of Mozart then tonight, perhaps attend a classical music concert at Mirabelle Palace (own expense).

Day 12. Salzburg - Graz

Today travel to the Austrian city of Graz, recent title holder of the ‘European Capital of Culture’ award. Here, a tour includes a visit to the Armoury Museum, holding the world’s largest historical collection of Baroque weaponry, as well as Eggenberg Castle. Then enjoy free time before dinner tonight.

Travel by coach to Budapest, and board your luxury river ship.

Day 15. Bratislava, Freedom of Choice Touring

On arrival in Slovakia’s capital, visit Bratislava Castle and take in the views across Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. Then choose from a medieval tour of the city or a tour taking you to several landmarks of the city’s Communist past. The afternoon is then at your leisure.

Day 16. Vienna, Freedom of Choice Touring

Today in Vienna, perhaps take a city tour, including a visit to an Austrian coffee house for coffee and cake. Or tour Schönbrunn Palace. Tonight you may like to join us for an optional Mozart and Strauss concert (own expense).

Day 17. Dürnstein - Melk

Arrive in Dürnstein for a tour, then continue to Melk for a guided tour of Melk’s Benedictine Abbey.

Day 18. Linz - Passau, Freedom of Choice Touring

Today, return to Salzburg on a day tour, enjoy an excursion to Cesky Krumlov or cruise to Passau and take a guided tour.

Day 19. Regensburg

Arrive in Regensburg, where a guided tour of the city includes the Old Town Hall and the Porta Pretoria gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD.

Day 20. Nuremberg, Freedom of Choice Touring

Enter the Main-Danube Canal then, in Nuremberg, choose between a World War II tour or a medieval tour.

Tour Bamberg then, during free time, perhaps visit a Bamberg Beer Haus and enjoy a local brew on us. Back on board, the ship enters the Main-Danube Canal.

Day 22. Würzburg, Rothenburg

See all the major sights in Würzburg, including the Residential Palace. Then enjoy an excursion to Rothenburg.

Disembark in Miltenberg and travel to Wertheim, then return to Miltenberg for a guided tour.

Today arrive in Rüdesheim, where the Winzerexpress will take you to Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Instrument Museum for a tour. Later, cruise through the Rhine Gorge.

Day 25. Koblenz - Cologne

Join a tour of Koblenz, then continue to Cologne for an evening walk through the heart of town.
